Myth has it that the term “spring cleaning” was coined because spring was the best season to freshen the house after several months of “hibernating” during winter. But how does this apply in Singapore with its warm summer weather all year round?
It was a Saturday morning, and while most of us were still snug in bed, seven alumni had travelled from all four corners of Singapore to gather at the NTUC SilverACE Boon Lay centre for the spring cleaning activity.
“I don’t even do my own household chores” said one alumna, as she wiped the cabinet. She appealed to remain anonymous to protect her identity, lest her family finds out what she is capable of and demands that she starts helping out with the household chores.
Though strangers at first, it didn’t take long before they warmed up to each other. Within hours, the NTUC SilverACE was spick and span under the nifty hands of these volunteers. As a finishing touch, the alumni assembled a few lanterns and hung them near the entrance to welcome the elderly who would be patronising the centre during the festive season.
Who knows, spring may eventually arrive at a certain anonymous alumna’s house someday. One thing’s for sure, the seven alumni members’s efforts and participation in this community activity are much appreciated by us and the centre.
Wish to be a part of such a meaningful Spring Cleaning activity? Fret not. Drop us a note to get updates for similar events!
