Cracking your head over the perfect present for a special occasion? Well, instead of the usual meal treat or another pretty mug, we have an idea for you. If the person for whom you are looking for a present is a dessert-lover, here’s something different you can gift – handmade macarons!
On a sweltering Saturday morning in August, a group of our alumni members joined us in learning about the secrets of baking perfect macarons at Mel’s Empire Bakery.
The instructor, Ms. Mel, started by demonstrating the steps for everyone to follow. Under clear instructions from Mel, everyone managed to get by without much struggle.
Here are some tips for the beginners:
- During the stage of macaronage, how do we know if the mixture has reached the perfect consistency? Just remember that moderation is key. Fold your mix until it flows down from your spatula in ribbons. Do not over or under fold.
- Macarons lighten in shade after baking, so do colour your mixture a bit darker than what you intended.
- Once you have piped all your batter on the baking tray, firmly tap the bottom of the tray a few times to release air bubbles.
After the macaron shells are done, the alumni got to select the filling for their macarons and even decorate them with edible pens, gold and silver dust. It’s a step that put your creativity to the test and a good way to convey your message to the gift recipient!
Thanks to Mel, we managed to conjure some yummy macarons that would make even our doubtful mothers go “mmm, sedap!” (Malay for “delicious”).
Ms. Rosalyn Cheong, Bachelor of Science in Marketing Class of 2018, brought along a friend for a special birthday treat. “The hands-on workshop is a good way to experience new things outside of work,” she shared.
Like Rosalyn, you can also get your special someone to join a macaron workshop! What could be better than savouring the fruit of your labour while enjoying your favourite bubble tea?
