Over the years, thousands of alumni have continued to fly our university flag high with their plethora of achievements. Out of these alumni, a distinctive group has been growing in size every year – founders of start-ups. Every year, more of our alumni choose to strike out on their own, some while they were still pursuing their education in SUSS.
Therefore SUSS Alumni Relations reached out to gather like-minded alumni entrepreneurs together to provide opportunities for potential collaborations at the inaugural SUSS Entrepreneur Par-tee 2019 held at mini golf course, Holey Moley Clarke Quay.
At the event, Ms. Evelyn Chong, Director of Office of Student and Alumni Relations, met every attendee to learn more about their respective companies and connected alumni in parallel industries with each other, forming the groundwork for potential collaboration. After the opening remarks, the alumni members were grouped into flights of four and tee-ed off at the mini golf course with plenty of laughs amidst flying balls.
After completing the nine-hole course, our alumni gathered back for an intimate sharing by Mr. James Chia, founder of ArcLab, an edu-tech (education technology) enterprise founded in 2012 and successfully developed to become a well-regarded industry player. He shared about the tough lessons gleaned over the years of being a start-up founder, from having to lay off employees due to a lack of funds, to neglecting friendships for years due to work, and how this path, while being the most challenging, is also the most rewarding to him.
Ms. Ellen Goel, Head of Entrepreneurship Programme at the Centre of Experiential Learning, then shared about the upcoming entrepreneur events and initiatives at our university. She highlighted the Alibaba Cloud-SUSS Certificate, which piqued the interest of a number of our alumni, including Mr. Vijay Dylan, an alumnus from the Class of 2012 who registered his interest on the spot.
As the programme ended, the alumni gathered round to continue their conversations over pizza. Many welcomed this initiative where they got to meet fellow alumni entrepreneurs, hear an astute sharing from James and receive updates on new initiatives from SUSS on the entrepreneurship front.
The following companies were represented at Par-Tee 2019:

We hope everyone had a tee-rific time and look forward to more alumni joining us at the Christmas edition of SUSS Entrepreneur Par-tee 2019!
