Ever walked into a Yankee Candle store, drawn in by the beautiful scents cocooning your senses in a loving embrace, only to see the price tag and having your stress levels shoot right back up? Our alumni must have found that relatable and hence resolved to take matters into their own D-I-Y hands with a candle crafting workshop!
20 alumni gathered together on 24 August 2019 to try their hand at whipping up a set of candles. The workshop was helmed by the affable Ms. Wai Teng from Soaprise, who started the workshop with a mini-session of essential oil mixing. She etched out our itinerary for the day: curate your mix of essential oils, blend it into the candlewax, and start decorating!
Time was of the essence here – the race to secure the scents was on! Wai Teng brought only a limited selection of scents, so the participants had to politely jostle each other for just one drip. We heard trade leaders in the making through the exchanges: ‘Eh I give you one drop of Peppermint, you share the Germanium, can?’ and shrewd redirection, ‘You don’t need Lavender, you smell so sweet already! But I don’t smell sweet enough, so give me.’
The room started to steadily exude notes of lavender, sweet orange and sandalwood. To combat the rising sleepiness, Wai Teng directed us to the next activity at hand: melting our own candlewax in a mini pot and add colouring for a more varied candle. Most of the participants opted for pastel hues. There was so much steam in the room, it may as well be a Hai Di Lao outlet.
After melting the candlewax, we now had the challenging task of determining the precise point to start decorating the candlewax surfaces. Wait too long and the surface would harden, pushing out any decorative dried flowers. Start too early and the decorations would sink to the murky bottom of the candlewax, never to be seen again. Hence, most participants wound up with the same results: one tub of gorgeously decorated candle and another tub that looks like it had seen better days. Still, most of their creations looked like it came straight out of a Pinterest mood board!
