It was 9:00 a.m. on a Saturday morning of 17 Aug 2019. 18 SUSS students and alumni had gathered at the Ang Mo Kio AWWA Centre as they prepared to bring 15 wheelchair bound seniors to the Changi Jewel Airport on a much anticipated outing. Prior to this, they had each taken time to visit the Changi Jewel Airport to site recce the place so as to ensure a smooth outing for the seniors. How thoughtful!
Below are some thoughts from our alumni and a special note from AWWA:
Alumna Ms. Ong, Class of 2016 Bachelor of Human Resource Management
We set off despite the erratic weather. Along the way, we sang, chatted and reminisced about their previous trip with the elders. At times, they also looked out of the windows, proud of Singapore’s transformation and beautiful landscape.
At Canopy Park, they were happy to pose for photos, particularly with the colourful animals at Topiary Walk. Lunch was a simple affair and we had to depart Changi soon after.
It had been a short but meaningful day, not only being able to bring the elders out, but also meeting fellow alumni of various cohorts. What touched me more was the care and concern showered towards each other by the pair of sisters within our group. Despite staying together for so many years, they continue to give in to each other and have never fought.
I hope this trip would also serve as a good memory for the elders in the years ahead.
Alumna Diyana Marina Binte Jasmi, Class of 2017 Bachelor of Communications with Psychology
It is my first time bringing out the seniors other than my own grandparents. Mixed emotions definitely as I have a soft spot for people who have lesser than me, in terms of family or daily needs. It was a pleasant experience from start to end as the seniors that my group was assigned to, were polite, calm and patient with us in the way that we handled them on their wheelchairs. They were eager to have their photos taken solo and with us, for good memories to look back on. I could see how appreciative they were and they had smiles on their faces when we chatted with them or helped them with whatever they needed. I will definitely participate again, when I am able to. Thank you SUSS, for organising such an important yet sometimes forgotten volunteer experience for the alumni. Everything was well organised from the start to end.

On behalf of all of us at AWWA, thank you and your volunteers for bringing our frail seniors on a wonderful outing to Jewel Airport last Saturday. It was heart-warming to see the volunteers taking such good care of the seniors, even prioritising the seniors over themselves – getting drenched under the rain while sheltering the seniors, squeezing into vans but making sure that the seniors were comfortable, and well-engaging the seniors throughout the outing. Thank you too, for being so dedicated in planning for the event and finding a lunch venue for the seniors despite the crowd on weekends. This outing would not have been possible if not for you and all the volunteers who opened their kind and caring hearts to the seniors on that Saturday morning.
