Editor's Note

Torchbearer – Passing the Baton

What a ride! I have already served 10 years as an alumni volunteer and as Editor of the Newsletter Group for the past five. The experience has been enriching and fulfilling. I decided finally to hand the baton of editorship over to my fellow member, Dennis Tan. I am sure he will lead the group to greater heights of alumni outreach through the newsletter.

The torch of penmanship is central to alumni fellowship. The stories, events and news from the university through its alumni and students are the flames, so to speak. The voice of “Head”, “Heart” and “Habit” roaring through the torch is fundamental to keeping the values of our university brightly lit.

Thank you for the road trip that I journeyed with the members of the editorial group and the buck is now passed to the new torchbearer!

“Out, out, brief candle! Life’s but a walking shadow.”

Director's Desk

The Habit of Lifelong Learning

How do we make our commitments stick? How do we form habits?

Director's Desk

The Habit of Lifelong Learning

We have already crossed Q2 of 2018. I wonder how many of us have taken stock of how well we had stuck to our new year resolutions, many of which we eagerly made and enthusiastically committed to adhere to at the beginning of the year.

Herein lies the important question, How do we make our commitments stick? Well, the answer may just lie in our ability to make something that we want to achieve “habit-forming”. And of course, the next question would be “How do we form habits?” What you repeatedly do, will overtime become habit forming. “Easier said than done!” I already hear this statement coming from many of us. And I guess it’s true. But in today’s world of rapid disruptions in so many areas of our life, can we afford not to form new habits and continue learning to keep up with the times?

Starting the habit of lifelong learning need not be a formidable and daunting task. Perhaps all it needs is for us to start small. I would like to suggest the PAR approach, to start us on the journey and hopefully make our habits stick.

First we need to find our passion (P). What is it that we enjoy learning? Doing something that you enjoy will be a strong motivator that keeps you interested in picking up the new skill or knowledge. It can be a hobby or a work or health topic that you want to explore further.

Next we need to take action (A). Finding your passion but not following up on it will not get you into the learning groove. See if you can integrate learning into your daily life somehow. Or perhaps even set aside a specific time in the day/week to pick up the skill/knowledge that you are passionate to acquire. Can you do it while you are commuting to work, setting aside an hour after dinner or…? What is important is to establish a routine for it to be habit forming.

And finally, set yourself a reward (R). This will keep you going during those times when you may be thinking of giving up due to demands at work, personal and family commitments etc. Focusing on the ultimate reward will hopefully keep us moving forward to reach our goal.

Once we get into the habit of learning something new continuously, we are already on our lifelong learning journey. And to borrow some golfing lingo to help remind us on how to get there, “It’s just PAR for the course.”

Best Regards,

Evelyn Chong
